When you are going through some difficult times in your life you need a real friend, not just a surface relationship. You need someone who cares, listens and genuinely wants to help you bear the weight of the things that are bothering you. It’s exhausting listening to meaningless small talk when you need someone to try to understand you and know your heart. Sometimes you just want to say out loud “Would to God that I had a real friend”. Haven’t you experienced that as well?
Maybe you’ve felt ignored, betrayed or perhaps even deceived by someone you thought was a close friend. And, perhaps you’ve felt like you can identify with David, and say “I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.” (Psa 142:4) So, you built walls around your heart, because you don’t want to take the risk of trusting anyone again.
In Search of a Real Friend
But, deep in your heart you still sigh and long for a real friend. A listening, compassionate and present friend. A wise companion. A friend that knows your heart. One who knows your circumstances through and through. A friend who can give you consolation and comfort. One who is strong, settled and focused. Someone who is willing to hear whatever you have to say, however, you feel you need to say it. Not a fair weather friend, but one who’ll stay with you through the storm. One who can help you when you need it most. You need a friend who can reach heaven for you when you’re unable to pray for yourself. You need someone who has experienced the same feelings and endured the same temptations like you but didn’t cave in and overcame them. And yet isn’t puffed up with pride and isn’t condescending.
Why No Earthly Friend Will Do
In short, no earthly friend will ever meet that need. Because there is no one on earth who can know your every step. There’s no one that can hear the thoughts of your broken heart. And there is none on earth who can be with you every moment, is strong and wise enough to deal with your issues. No mortal friend could ever meet your needs because they would have to be omnipresent, omnipotent and a loving mediator before the throne of heaven.
Friend of Sinners: Christ’s Greatest Glory Our Greatest Blessing
But grace has touched your heart. The Spirit reminds you that though others may forsake you there is a Friend who loves at all times, a “brother born for adversity” (Pro. 17:17). A Friend who has promised “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Heb 13:5). So then Christ’s deity isn’t a mere biblical doctrine. It’s not merely words written in a creed or some dusty old theology book. But, it is a truth written powerfully and indelibly on the heart of the believer. What a mercy it is to know Jesus as a Friend. This Friend bore the scornful reproach of being a “friend of sinners” (Luke 7:34), but we find this to be His greatest glory in Heaven and our greatest blessing on earth.
